Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions

Prepare

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, cream the shortening with 1 1/2 cups sugar until evenly combined. Mix in the eggs.
  3. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Stir the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture just until well blended.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar with the cinnamon.

Shape and Bake

  1. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls. Coat each ball in cinnamon sugar, then arrange them on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  2. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are lightly browned.
  3. Transfer the cookies from the baking sheet to wire racks and let them cool for 5 minutes.
